Georgia O'Keeffe
Why We Like Her: Georgia O'Keeffe is a famous American artist, well known for her abstract works that generally had representation within the imagery. Born in Wisconsin but raised in Virginia, Georgia O'Keeffe took a summer art course at the University of Virginia in 1912. While attending summer sessions at UVa, she was influenced to begin painting again after a period of becoming discouraged with her work. She was just a student, but there she introduced the avant garde techniques that made her famous. Georgia went on to become a world-reknowned artist of American Modernism, married talented photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz in 1924, and received both the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Gerald Ford in 1977 and the National Medal of Arts from Ronald Reagan in 1985. O'Keeffe is a very influential female artist, and her famous works are featured at galleries all across the United States.
